I Thought Fake Greenery Was Tacky. Then I Actually Tried It.

Okay, I’m just gonna say it.

I spent years judging artificial plants. If it wasn’t real, I wasn’t interested. I thought faux greenery always looked cheap and obvious — the kind of thing you’d find at a discount store, covered in dust, with that weird plasticky shine.

So when my sister asked me to help plan her wedding and suggested using fake foliage, I was skeptical. She wanted greenery everywhere — arches, centerpieces, bouquets — but real foliage was way over budget and half of it would’ve wilted before the ceremony even started. So I gave in and started hunting for decent-looking artificial greenery.

Honestly? I was surprised.

What I Ended Up With

I came across OULI’s trailing greenery stems, and what caught my eye was the variety. It wasn’t just the same fern leaf copied in different shades of green — there were seven completely different styles, each one looking and behaving differently.

The Boston Fern one became my instant favorite. It’s fine and feathery, and it added this soft, woodland texture without overwhelming everything around it. It just… worked. I kept reaching for it over and over again.

The Curly Dragon Beard Grass was the one I didn’t expect to like. It twists and curls in a way that breaks up the usual straight, stiff foliage you see in cheaper artificial plants. It made arrangements look less rigid — more natural, more organic.

The Small Leaf Willow turned out to be the workhorse of the bunch. Dense enough to add fullness, but soft enough that it didn’t weigh the arrangement down. It’s one of those pieces that just works for almost everything.

And the Maple Leaf stem — I’ll be honest, I grabbed it mostly because I thought it looked cute. But it ended up being the perfect accent for adding a little textural contrast, especially for a spring-themed table centerpiece.

What I Learned

Here’s the thing I didn’t expect: greenery isn’t just about filling space. It’s about structure. It shapes the arrangement, adds movement, gives depth. Different foliage styles create completely different feelings — soft and woodsy, bold and tropical, clean and minimalist, playful and whimsical.

I used to think fake greenery was the lazy option. Now I see it as just another design tool — one that’s consistent, reliable, and doesn’t die on me two days before an event.

Would I recommend it?

If you’re doing event decor, wedding flowers, or even just sprucing up a corner of your home, this stuff is genuinely useful. I don’t say that lightly — I was a real-plant-only person for years.

But these stems are flexible, easy to work with, and actually look good. And the variety means you’re not stuck with one look for everything.

I’m not saying I’ll never buy a real plant again. But I’m definitely not judging fake ones the same way anymore.

If you’re in the same boat — skeptical, hesitant, worried it’ll look cheap — just try a few stems and see what you think. It might surprise you too.
